Aaaaargh!
My review of They Were Sisters disappeared in the Great Blogger Annoyance of 2011. If Blogger gets around to restoring things that were lost during their “fix” you will get to read the review. But I am not sure I have the mental energy to recreate it.
I will leave you with two thoughts from the lost review:
1. This is the kind of book that makes you miss your train stop.
2. I think this is now my favorite Whipple.
Persephone just noted today on Facebook that the film of They Were Sisters is now out on DVD. Huzzah.

I think They Were Sisters is better than Someone at a Distance. This appears to be a controversial point of view, but I'm glad to have a co-conspirator in you.

How utterly frustrating! And yet, you have made your point, oh so succinctly, and I can't wait to give this one a go.
When searching the shelves for my next read I keep going around my unread Whipple's for the delayed gratification…but I really can't put it off much longer. And I loved Someone at a Distance, let's see if I can be swayed!

This is so frustrating! My review of Jane and Prudence was saved as a draft and that's gone, too. I can't bear the thought of rewriting either. I'll give it another day, then I'll just put up a sentence or two.
I can't wait to read They Were Sisters! It's on the top of my “London Pile” of books.

I have checked for Dorothy Whipple in Melbourne and no luck at the library! now to scour some op shops.
This is a new one for me.

What a wonderfully understated name for the horror of yesterday. From all the references to “the Great Blogger Annoyance” that I've seen today, I hope that Blogger takes a hint and at least lets us know in the future if they're going to annoy us again.
Now I really have to try some Whipple!

Now I feel better than I have been a complete blogging slacker of late. . . see, if I had actually posted something, it would have disappeared, right? So I was being smart, not lazy.
And apparently The Were Sisters is NOT available yet as a Region 1 DVD! So annoying. I may have to break down and buy a region-free DVD player sometime. It's so vexing not to be able to buy all the great British stuff. Hmpf. And I just received They Were Sisters as a Mother's Day gift!

I was going to say “must read this, then” until I saw your comment that Someone at a Distance is your least favourite Whipple.. it is far and away my favourite of the four novels and one collection of stories that I've read. Will this mean I won't like They Were Sisters as much? Probably not…

Oh, how annoying! I would have loved to have read your thoughts in full. So far I have read Someone at a Distance and They Were Sisters -in that order- and preferred They Were Sisters, which I thought was a lot darker.

They Were Sisters is my favorite Whipple too. I wondered if that was because it was the first one I read. So far, you're the only one I know who also names this one as their favorite. Everyone else's seems to be Somewhere at a Distance.
Now, you just have to find Because of The Lockwoods (another great Whipple). I'm still looking for Greenbanks.

Darlene: I was putting off the Whipple's for the same reason. I think I only have one of the Persephone editions that I haven't read yet. They need to publish more.
JoAnn: It was so frustrating. If I had only published it I could have gotten from my feed thingy.
Read the Book: I think Blogger was caught off guard. Someone must have spilled a Pepsi on the computer.
Karen: I so agree about DVD regions. Apparently there are codes one can get online to make one's DVD player change regions. I have yet to try it.
Simon: You will like They Were Sisters. Fear not.
Claire: It was the darkest so far that I have read. And that evil, evil, Geoffrey.

Virginia: I think it is hard to choose a favorite. I definitely also loved The Priory and High Wages and I really loved her short stories.
