I have lived in DC for a decade and have never visited the Folger Shakespeare Library. So when my friend Ron, an English teacher, visited it was time to go have a look. Happily it was the same day as their Shakespeare Birthday Open House so we got to see the reading room which is usually only open to scholars.

That's a beautiful alley! I borrowed my own book of “porn” this week from the local library….Candida Hofer's book of Librarires – have you seen it? It didn't feature this beautiful library though. I was very impressed with the one at Trinity College in Dublin and the gorgeous staircase in the Rijksmuseum. Heaven!

I've spent many happy hours doing research in the Folger Reading Room and the stacks. Glad you had a chance to see the place, it's truly special.

I so need to go here, especially since I use some of the Folger Shakespeare Library teaching materiels when I teach Julius Caesar and Macbeth. Thanks for sharing!

I think this was a highlight of my last trip to D.C. While it takes less than an hour to do the little theatre tour, see the gallery and view the gift shop, it was so relaxed, informative, and fun. It's a great way to get away from the crowds on the mall, too.

I'm super embarrassed to admit I've lived just outside D.C. my entire life and have never even heard of this library! And I just made a pilgrimage to England and saw Shakespeare's birthplace! OY. Must correct this soon. Thanks for posting the lovely shots and encouraging me to head there soon!
