Sunday Painting: The Wrestlers by Thomas Eakins

Although I have never been to Columbus, when I bought this postcard the painting was at the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio. But now I see that it belongs to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Huh… I just saw Eakins' sketch for this at the Philadelphia Museum of Art today. It's interesting — rather large, and mostly detailed, but with a strange mess of modeling behind the top boy's head.

Lovely to see the painting itself, even if only digitally.

This is stunning. I'd love to see this one in person. I've been to museum in LA but don't remember seeing this one.

Kathleen: I went to LACMA once and got yelled at by a “guard” for pointing at a painting. I was many feet away from the canvas so I am not sure what she was worried about.
