This Man is My Latest Obssession

Until today I had never heard of this composer. I was listening to BBC Radio 3 online and came across Wojciech Kilar’s piece Orawa. And now I am obssessed. Thanks Radio 3, I have been searching for classical music that is new to me.

It is amazing. There are many videos of this piece on YouTube but I chose this one because the acoustic of the room makes for an interesting effect and the conductor looks like Iris Murdoch. If you listen to this make sure you give it a minute or two to really get into it. And if you stay to the end you won’t be disappointed.

That was great! What I treat. Love the conductor!

I'm going to bookmark this for myself (makes for lively write-to music) . . .

Inkslinger: I am glad you liked it. If I weren't on a spending moratorium right now I would buy a recording or two of his works.

Thanks for this. Classical music is my main passion – even more than books – but I rarely discuss it on the blog as it seems to be the kiss of death to any comments.

I shall have to listen to the music without the distraction of Iris!

Mrs B: I definitely want to get this on CD.

Steerforth: I have found the same thing. I figure if I slip it in now and then it may inspire someone to open their mind to classical music.

Kilar writes a lot of film scores as well, perhaps most famously that for Bram Stoker's Dracula. When I first heard it outside the context of the film (and during a storm in a café outside the Jewish cemetery in Krakow, which made for excellent ambience), it blew me away, and I've been a fan ever since.

Isabella: That sounds amazing. After I discovered the clip I posted here, I listened to a bunch of other videos of his music including the Dracula soundtrack. It really is quite compelling.
