A little lower than the main observation deck you can go out onto the mountain itself. Some folks ski, some go for hikes on the glacier, others go on dogsled. And others, like me, spend a lot of time sucking in as much fresh air as possible. Not just because it smells like a nice winter day in Minnesota, but because the air is so thin up there you feel light headed and very sleepy.

To the Top of Europe V: At the Top
Once the train gets to the top there is a whole complex with shops, restaurants, an ice palace, viewing areas etc. To get to the very top, you take an elevator from the train station up to the observatory.

Grindelwald
Grindelwald was the perfect place to use as a base for our exploration, and the Derby Hotel was the perfect place to stay. Clean, comfy, really well located. The trains in and out of town stopped right below us (with minimum noise). Plus I thought it was great to sit on our balcony and watch people and trains.

A really delicious, hearty lunch in Waldspitz. We had this Rosti, which is essentially potato hashbrowns in this case with cheese, ham, egg, and tomato. And While we sat there eating, the clouds cleared up and the views became even more spectacular. We we first sat down, you couldn’t see anything out that window but clouds.

Hiking at 7,160 Feet
We took a gondola from Grindelwald up to First for a days hiking. The weather was cool, cloudy, and at times rainy. But the clouds kind of made the already amazing scenery more mysterious and interesting.
